...habits.  First and foremost, Happy New Year! A new year means new nutrition goals to conquer and possibly a new cleansing diet to trial, right? Wrong. Before I go ahead and tell you all of the reasons why you should not go on a 'cleansing diet' (also known as a detox diet) lets define this term. Cleansing diet: a diet aimed to remove accumulated toxins from the body by cleansing the bowel or colon. There are many ways in which this can be achieved (e.g. consuming herbal/medical products or laxatives, fasting or adhering to strict diets that eliminate major food groups or certain foods, consuming large amount of water or juice). These diets often claim to promote healthy intestinal bacteria, enhance energy and metabolism, and support weight loss. Sounds appealing, right? I have a secret for you (my hint: Darwin's Theory of Evolution). You do not need to buy a pill or consume certain liquids to detoxify your body despite what supporters claim. There is no scientific evidence to suggest that cleansing maintains or enhances bowel health, or achieves long lasting weight loss. Our body is equipped with advantageous organs (the liver, the kidney, intestines, lungs) that allow for this detoxification process. This enables us to survive. Questions that I often ask my clients are: what would happen if you did not put oil in your car? How would your car operate? Where would your car eventually end up? Just like the car, your body needs TLC (i.e. proper fuel to function). Detox diets or cleanses can be very dangerous. For example, some cleanses can result in electrolyte imbalances, low blood sugars, low or high blood pressure, dehydration, and vitamin, mineral and macronutrient deficiencies. The best ‘cleansing’ strategy is to  consume a balanced diet, exercise regularly, limit alcohol consumption and avoid smoking. Looking for a personalized nutrition plan or ways to improve your diet? Strawberry Cheesecake Smoothie

Makes one serving

 

Ingredients:

1/3c 1% cottage cheese

6 strawberries, stems removed

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp chia seeds

4 ice cubes

1/3c water

1/2 graham cracker, crumbled (optional)

 

In a blender, combine all of the ingredients (except the graham cracker) and blend until smooth. Top with graham cracker crumbles. This smoothie is a great snack option. Enjoy.
